The Difference between Personal Coaching and Traditional Therapy

I hold a Doctoral degree in Depth Psychology and a Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology, which has given me a background and wealth of knowledge about human nature and behavior from which I can draw upon as a personal coach.

Therapy and my approach to coaching share some important core principles, e.g. a person-centered, empathetic approach and unconditional positive regard for the client. However, there are three key differences between coaching and therapy:

Orientation: in therapy the focus is on helping clients deal with the past, whereas coaching focuses on the present and future and assumes you are ready to attempt to pursue a fulfilled, authentic life.

Goals: therapy aims to ‘fix’ problems, or at least make them less debilitating. Coaching provides you with the tools and teaches you the processes and skills needed to create new opportunities and get more out of life.

Relationships: The therapist, client relationship is often based on an expert patient model, whereas, coaching is a partnership between client and coach.

The past can be a lesson...
the future an opportunity...
or not...
"Such as we are...you will be."
